similar to the sarah palin's post-election defeat plan. this time it's paul ryan whose future is being leaked about by his supporters who are fairly, clearly assuming that they are about to lose and they need to think of something else for paul ryan to do because he's not going to be business i si as vice president. publically ryan and allies maintain that momentum is behind the romney/ryan ticket, but his biggest boosters realize he can write his own ticket. these allies spoke on the condition to discuss private proposals they were preparing for him. if romney lose, ryan will be seen as a white house contender in 2016 just like sarah palin was in 2012. for the next few years, democrats would lay traps forcing them to take sides on measures to come back to haunt him. that's why ryan's biggest boosters are considering why it wouldn't be better for paul ryan to resign from the house. he could write a book. or he could teach at a university. days before the election, paul ryan's supporters are leaking their plans to the press for what they want paul ryan to do since he's not going to be v

that paul ryan's staff went out of their way to stage manager storm photo op at a donation center in wisconsin. plus, he says, quote, the packing was proceeding too quickly and the supporters were given the order to slow down and then to stop to be sure that there was still goods to be packed when ryan entered. when ryan entered? another staged event just like his fiasco at the soup kitchen? earlier this month, paul ryan went to an empty soup kitchen to wash two products that had already been left there for him to clean. empty gestures, photo ops, petty politics. and once again today, mitt romney not answering questions about whether he still wants to privatize fema and cut federal disaster relief. or a working president with a republican governor to get something done and fulfill a basic role of government. take care of people. that's the choice in this election. do we want a country that says, you're on your own when you're in trouble or that we're all in this together and we care for all of us collectively. joining me now is victoria de francesca soto and jonathan capeheart, an

'm joined now by gloria borger and ryan lizza. thanks, guys. who's got the edge right now and we're getting closer and closer. >> it's hard to say. our head is exploding with all of these polls. but if you look at our -- let's take the state of ohio, which is of course so key to both campaigns. it's hard to see how romney would win the presidency without winning ohio, although they now say they could. although if you look at the internals you see what you've been seeing all along. president obama is up with women about 12 points, mitt romney up with men by 8 points. romney has made some in roads in suburban areas, but in our poll, the president is up with independent voters by about 5 points. what romney needs to keep doing, to get the momentum or to continue a momentum that he had after the first debate is to get those voters out in the suburban areas, married women in particular, that could make the difference for him in the state of ohio, which is so key. but as for overall momentum, we're getting so many polls in every day, you talk to both campaigns and they say their tracking is the b

the republicans are withstanding the attacks on the ryan budget, the medicare attacks, but governor romney would like that lead among older, more reliable, more republican voters to be a little bit bigger than 52-46. that's one thing he needs to work on. this is significant. like in michigan, the auto bailout plays big in ohio and look at this. you might say the president's only getting 41% of white men, 46% of white women. that's actually a good number. if the president can keep above 40% among whites overall and above 40% among white men, it's pretty much game over in the electorate. this is a statistic we will watch as we get closer to election day. if the president is above 40 among whites, especially above 40 among white men, in most states he would be well on his path to victory. you see this more and more in industrial states affected by the auto bailout, the president runs stronger among white men. if that poll were to hold up, can governor romney get to 270 without ohio and how much easier is it for the president to get to 270 with ohio? let's start with the president. he's at 237 right

was only up by four. paul and ryan along with john avlon in toledo, ohio. romney has outspent the president in pennsylvania since he became the nominee. i saw this. i was stunned when our producer looked at these numbers. of the 15 million total, just in this week alone. is this money well spent? >> i think it makes a lot of sense for this reason. now, it's true that ohio might be a tighter state, but the question is, it's the marginal benefit. mitt romney spent a ton of time in ohio and if spending an additional few hours as we get closer to the election could make a big difference in pennsylvania given he has spent far less time in that state, that's what you've got to think about. real additional hours in ohio make that much of a difference there, where as in pennsylvania, it could be a difference in defeat. it's 20 electoral votes versus 20 in ohio. this could really scramble the map. >> i'm going to look at the map in a second, but first, paul, i want to go to you. mitt romney has put 2 million ads worth in pennsylvania over the past week and become's going to campaign for him on monda

at least one more time. paul ryan is here today. that says it all. both campaigns know that this is a very competitive state to the end. the suburbs are the key areas. make this point before i throw it back to you, 1.3 million people have already voted in the state of colorado. i talked to is the secretary of state today, he says that's probably about half of the electorate and says you can still vote until tomorrow. more than 50% of the votes will be cast before election day and they're already starting to count them. we were watching that process in downtown denver. >> are we getting any indication on how the independent voters are moving right now? >> reporter: it's a critical question because this state is roughly evenly divided between democrats, republicans, independents or unaffiliated voters. if you look at our poll, our poll shows a dead heat. and 49% of the independents go for president obama and joe biden, 47% go for governor romney and paul ryan. moderate voters who tend to live in the suburbs, many of them independents, 60% for the president to 38% for governor romney. if you'
